The maintenance of an effective water seal around gas holder “lifts” is a key health and safety issue and monitoring is a requirement. The problem occurs when oscillatory movement of the gas holder lift arises from pressure increases causing the water seal around one or more lifts to be lost. There then follows an escape of gas, which is both an economic loss and a severe safety hazard, particularly to property in the near vicinity.
PACS 300T, the battery operated MiniRTU, provides a highly effective intrinsically safe solution. Located near a pair of level switches either side of the water seal cup, the 300T monitors the status of both switches and transmits any change of state to a receiver located in the on-site control room.
At the receiver, signals may be re-created as hardwired outputs or integrated into an existing PLC or off site telemetry outstation via a serial interface.
The network can be extended to monitor other parameters such as water temperature and/or ambient temperature which may also become a critical factor in winter on exposed locations. Without the need for power supplies and with minimal wiring the system is quickly installed and highly cost effective.
If there are no modern site telemetry facilities, the option of collecting the gasholder data and transmitting this off site via a T-Box telemetry station means the complete system can be supplied by PACS. This presents the data over PSTN, Radio or any number of alternative media is an OPEN protocol (MODBUS RTU) which can be fed directly into most modern SCADA and PC systems. |
